Lowchen dog – Little Lion of Germany

 The Lowchen  or Little Lion Dog  is a breed of dog, small and registered in toy dogs that was developed as a companion dog. Playful and gentle, the Lowchen is a great companion for children and adult. They are happiest when they are in the company of the people they love.  They make excellent watchdogs with their alarm barking but they may become a nuisance to neighbors. The Lowchen originated in Europe around 400 years age, most likely in Germany as the name Lowchen means “ little lion” in German. There are several theories as to the origin of the Lowchen. 










One theory has the breed originating in Northern Europe - i.e. Belgium, Germany and France.  Another theory breed originated in the Mediterranean. The third and fourth theories Lowchen may have originated in Russia or even Tibet. The Lowchen is slightly longer than he is tall. The ideal height is 12-14 inches and weighs between 4-8 kgs. Lowchen is lively and active affectionate and gentle. The Lowchen is an intelligent dog who learns quickly and easily. Lowchen are fearless watchdogs and bark on suspicious people. 











Lowchen make excellent apartment residents, but they can be prone to excessive barking. Feeding Lowchen daily amount ½ to 1 cup of high quality dry food a day , divided in to two meals. The Lowchen has a dense coat that is long and moderately wavy with a soft texture. Lowchen found in all colours and combinations. Regular brushing keeps the coat from tanging. The head is short with a broad skull. The ears are pendant in shape and moderate in length with feathering. The short body is well proportioned. The most popular colour is white, black and lemon. The Lowchen is a healthy breed. The life expectancy is about 12-14 years.
